about

FEYNMAN’s first album in seven years charts a new path for the Parisian producer, showcasing a thrilling depth to his sound in terms of melodic and structural composition. Falls: A Gigantic Rebirth blooms with emotive detail, as these 18 songs come together to form one giant wave that hits the listener with maximum impact from the very first second. It’s a record that is the product of pure artistic growth, reflecting Yoann Feynman’s sense of self-patience when it comes to his own development—a testament to listening to yourself and your own instincts that results in an immersive and gorgeous sonic statement.

Falls: A Gigantic Rebirth is the first full-length release from Feynman since 2016’s breakout Air.
After canceling tour dates in the interest of personal recalibration, Feynman drew his attention to the studio while also maintaining his role as Creative Director of FAKE MUSIC, the label he co-founded a decade ago; ironically, stepping away from the limelight resulted in more creative drive than ever before, as he wrote and recorded the lion’s share of Falls: A Gigantic Rebirth way, way back in late 2016 following the release of Air. “I’m more of a studio guy than I am an entertainer,” Feynman says while talking about what led him to go harder than ever in his recording space.

While refining and fine-tuning Falls: A Gigantic Rebirth, Feynman also created the Illusions II EP, which saw release in 2017 and represented an extension of his ever-evolving creative process. “I started to write music the way one would paint,” he recalls on his changes in industriousness. “I wasn’t doing a hundred takes—I was working more in-the-moment while streamlining my own sound. I became comfortable about my flow. I used to be more concerned about keeping everything super polished. When you’re looking to make everything as perfect as possible, you tend to miss some of the directness of a first take”

And Falls: A Gigantic Rebirth is absolutely a full realization of Feynman’s expressed creative ethos, expanding upon the lithe and lovely nü-disco and synth driven sounds found on Air to encompass the lush, nearly tactile sound design that fellow studio wizards like Max Cooper are known for. Falls: A Gigantic Rebirth was recorded ,for the vast majority, with live instrumentation—zero presets to be found here, every synth note triggered by human touch—and it thusly exudes a flesh-and-blood warmth far beyond what you might expect from such analog trappings. “something about u” ripples and echoes not unlike the celestial pop of M83, while “falls” is pure techno bliss that winds along a glowing melodic path, with synth hits that carry all the meditative properties of raindrops gently landing against a windowsill.

Individual highlights abound—the pulsing body music of “SPRING WATERS,” “do you remember”’s fluffy disco shake—but make no mistake: this is a record meant to be heard as a singular piece, expansive and perfectly cohesive in a manner that represents Feynman’s most mature and personal music to date.“
